Privacy Policy

Version 1.0, in effect from 23 October 2026. Effective date: 23 October 2026.

In short

  • You sign in with your email address and a code we email you. There's no password.
  • We use your birth details to work out your chart and timeline. We keep them, with your birth time and birthplace encrypted, so we can extend your timeline later without asking again.
  • Your journal entries are yours. We store them encrypted and only use them to show them back to you.
  • Your readings are written in advance and matched to your chart. Your details aren't sent to AI services.
  • We don't sell your information or use it for advertising.
  • You can download your journal or delete your account yourself, at any time, from your account page.

The rest of this page explains each of these in more detail.

1. Who we are

Astro Journal is run by Troy Saint Laurent (ABN 79 421 185 475) in Victoria, Australia ("we", "us", "our"). We are responsible for the personal information described here, and we follow the Australian Privacy Principles. Wherever you live, you have the rights in section 8.

Astro Journal is free for now, and we don't take payments or hold any payment details. If we introduce paid plans, we'll update this policy and date it before they start, including who handles payments.

2. What we collect, and why

Your account. You sign in with your email address. Each time, we email you a 6-digit code, and entering it signs you in. We keep your email address so you can sign in and so we can contact you about your account. If you gave us your first and last name on our old store, we keep them to greet you by name.

Your birth details. You give us your date, time and place of birth so we can work out your chart and timeline. We keep:

  • your date of birth, to show your age at each period, and so that readers under 18 see the versions of our readings written for them;
  • your birth time and birthplace (its name, coordinates and time zone), encrypted, so we can extend or rebuild your timeline later without asking you for them again;
  • your chart: where the planets and your chart's angles (such as your Ascendant) were when you were born. Your timeline and chart page are built from it.

Because your chart's angles are worked out from your birth time and place, your chart could show roughly when and where you were born, even on its own. So we treat it as personal information and look after it like everything else on this page.

Your birthplace search. As you type your birthplace, the letters go to our server so it can suggest places. We don't keep what you type.

Your timeline. We keep the periods on your timeline, their dates and the readings shown for them, and a ready-made copy of your timeline and chart page so they load quickly.

Your reading setting. If you choose an option under "Word my Venus and Mars readings for", we keep that choice and use it only to word those readings. It's optional, and readers under 18 always get the neutral wording.

Your journal entries. We store them for you so they appear on every device you use, and a copy stays in your browser on each device. The name and note of each entry are encrypted before they're saved, with a key kept outside our database. Because our server holds that key, we can technically read them, so we're telling you plainly: we only use them to show them back to you and to give you a copy when you ask. We won't use them for anything else, including research or developing our service, unless we ask you and you agree.

Keeping sign-in safe. When you ask for a code, we keep it with your email address and the network address the request came from, for 24 hours after the code is used or expires. To stop abuse, we count requests per email address and per network address, kept only in scrambled form and deleted after 24 hours without use.

Technical logs. Our server keeps short-lived logs so we can find and fix faults. They record when a request was made, what it was for, whether it worked and the network address it came from, and some lines name your account by our internal account number. They never contain your email address, your birth details or anything you write. We delete them after 30 days.

In your browser. One cookie keeps you signed in. It's essential, holds only a random sign-in token, and is sent only to our server. The website also saves a few things in your browser so it works the way you left it: your journal entries, a note that you're signed in, and display settings such as your chart layout. We don't set advertising or tracking cookies.

If you used our old Shopify store. We moved your email address, name, birth date, chart, journal entries and timeline into your account here, so nothing was lost. We keep your old store customer number until that store is closed, then delete it. Until then, Shopify still holds what it held for that store, under Shopify's privacy policy.

What we don't collect. We don't collect your device's location, your contacts or your photos, and we don't use advertising IDs or tracking tools.

3. Who we share it with

  • DigitalOcean runs our server and database in Sydney, Australia, and keeps our database's backups. Everything we keep (section 2) is stored there.
  • Cloudflare hosts our website and sits in front of our server. Everything you send us passes through it, along with your network address, but it isn't where we keep your account or journal.
  • Loops sends our emails. It receives your email address and your sign-in code. If you've said yes to news from us, it also keeps your email address to send that.
  • Authorities, only where the law requires it.
  • A new owner, if the business is ever sold. We'd tell you, and they would have to follow this policy.

We don't sell or rent your information, share it with advertisers, or send it to AI services. We may share overall figures, such as how many timelines were calculated in a month, that can't identify anyone.

4. Where it's kept

Our server, database and backups are in Sydney, Australia. Cloudflare carries traffic through its network around the world, usually through a data centre near you. Loops handles your email address outside Australia, in the United States. Wherever it goes, we require it to be protected to the standard of this policy. For the EU, EEA and UK, see section 9.

5. How we protect it

  • There are no passwords to steal. A sign-in code works once, for 10 minutes, and stops working after 5 wrong tries. We store it only in scrambled (hashed) form.
  • Staying signed in uses a random token, stored only in hashed form. It lasts up to 30 days, and you can end every session at once with "Sign out everywhere" on your account page.
  • We limit how many codes can be asked for per email address and per network address.
  • Your journal entries' names and notes, and your birth time and birthplace, are encrypted with a key kept outside the database, so a copy of the database or a backup doesn't reveal them.
  • Our database provider also encrypts the whole database where it's stored, and everything between you and us travels encrypted.
  • The exact coordinates and time zone of your birthplace are never sent to your browser.

If something ever went wrong and a breach was likely to cause you serious harm, we would tell you as soon as we could, and tell the regulators the law requires us to.

6. How long we keep it

Information How long
Email address, name and reading setting Until you delete your account
Birth details, chart and timeline Until you delete your account
Journal entries Until you delete them, or your account
Sign-in codes, with the network address that asked for them 24 hours after the code is used or expires
Signed-in sessions Up to 30 days, or until you sign out
Technical logs 30 days
Database backups Up to 7 days

Deleting your account. Choose "Delete my account" on your account page. It takes effect straight away: we delete your account, birth details, chart, timeline and journal entries, and sign you out on every device. We don't keep anonymised copies of your readings, chart or journal. Our database provider's daily backups are kept for up to 7 days, so a copy can stay in a backup for up to 7 days before it's gone for good. Backups are only used to recover from a fault. You can also ask us by email, and we'll do it for you within 30 days.

7. Under 18

You're welcome to use Astro Journal if you're under 18, with a parent or guardian's permission. If you're under 18:

  • you see versions of our readings written for younger readers;
  • the Venus and Mars reading setting stays neutral;
  • if we ever offer paid plans, a parent or guardian needs to make or approve any purchase.

A parent or guardian can contact us at troysaintlaurent@gmail.com to see or delete a young person's information.

8. Your rights, wherever you live

You can do these yourself, at any time, on your account page:

  • download a copy of your account details, birth details, journal entries and timeline, in a common, machine-readable format ("Download my journal");
  • change your reading setting;
  • delete individual journal entries, or your whole account.

You can also ask us to:

  • show you the information we hold about you;
  • correct anything that's wrong;
  • stop or limit a particular use of it;
  • withdraw your consent to anything we do because you agreed to it, such as sending you news.

Email troysaintlaurent@gmail.com. We'll reply within 30 days, and it's free. We may need to check it's you first, usually by asking you to write from the email address on your account. Using these rights never changes how we treat you.

We only send news or marketing emails if you've said yes, and every one has an unsubscribe link. We won't use your information for research without asking you first.

9. The EU, EEA and UK

If you live in the EU, EEA or UK, the GDPR (or UK GDPR) applies. We use your information:

  • to perform our contract with you: your account and sign-in, working out and showing your timeline, and keeping your journal;
  • for our legitimate interests in keeping the service secure and fixing faults, such as the sign-in limits and technical logs;
  • with your consent, for news and marketing emails;
  • to meet legal obligations.

We're based in Australia, which the EU and UK haven't formally assessed as giving equivalent protection, so we protect your information to the standard of this policy wherever it's held. Where Cloudflare or Loops handle it outside Australia, they protect it under their own safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses.

Your timeline is produced automatically, but it doesn't make any decision with a legal or similarly significant effect on you.

You can complain to the data protection authority where you live, or to the Information Commissioner's Office in the UK.

10. The United States

We don't sell or share personal information as US state privacy laws define those words, we don't use it for targeted advertising, and we don't profile you in ways that have legal effects. Wherever you live in the US, you have the rights in section 8.

California residents: we don't disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing.

11. Other countries

In New Zealand, you can also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. Elsewhere, you can contact the privacy regulator in your country.

12. Questions and complaints

If you have a question or a concern, email troysaintlaurent@gmail.com and we'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992, or the regulator where you live (sections 9 to 11).

13. Changes to this policy

We'll update this policy if what we collect or how we use it changes, including if we introduce paid plans. The date at the top shows the current version. If a change affects you in a meaningful way, we'll tell you by email or with a notice on the site before it takes effect.
